Objective The homeowners wanted to create an open floor plan combining the family room, kitchen, and dining room areas to accommodate their active, growing family. They also needed a mud room off the garage. Initially they thought they would have to add on to accomplish everything they wanted. Our Solution We removed the interior walls separating the kitchen, dining room, and family room, eliminating the formal dining room and converting it to an extension of the kitchen. The adjacent living room was converted to a TV room with Mom’s desk off to one side. The original family room was converted to a hearth room with a remodeled fireplace and a snack bar at the end of the kitchen. We even removed the basement door and a portion of the wall leading to the basement for a more open feeling. The basement was remodeled as an extension of the upper living space. The mudroom was created by stealing a little space from the family room to accommodate a large closet and bench area. |
